Action Alert! Tell Your Member of Congress to Support an End to Abortion Funding
Defense of the right to life is sometimes called a fringe issue, but it isn’t and
never has been. Don’t be fooled by the crowds at last weekend’s Women’s March events
in Washington and elsewhere — more than half of the nation opposes abortion, and
a greater majority doesn’t understand why tax dollars ever pay for the violent termination
of an unborn baby’s life.
It’s appropriate, then, that one of the first legislative priorities for the new
Congress is found in H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion
Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017
. This bill, if enacted into law, would keep the abortion industry away from
the federal treasury. Importantly, it would also make the Hyde Amendment, passed
annually to prohibit Medicaid funds from being used for abortion, a permanent part
of federal law.

House floor for a vote.
The Hyde Amendment is the brainchild of its namesake, the late former Rep. Henry
Hyde of Illinois. It was first passed in 1976 as a rider (amendment) to an annual
appropriation bill, and was the first legislative victory for the pro–life movement
following the horrendous Roe v. Wade
U.S. Supreme Court decision of 1973,
which invalidated state abortion laws.
There will be loud opposition to this bill; the Democratic Party platform explicitly
called for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment. They won’t take its enshrinement in
federal law lightly. But we need to remember that the majority of Americans are
pro–life, and that majority expects a pro–life administration and a pro–life Congress
to reflect its wishes.
A version of H.R. 7 passed the House of Representatives in 2015, and is likely to
pass this year as well. We’re asking CMC members and all believers to contact their
Member of Congress promptly to demonstrate the commitment values voters have for
the sanctity of human life.
This bill won’t reduce the number of abortions performed in this nation to zero,
which is our ultimate goal. But it will ensure that our tax dollars aren’t paying
for the destruction of innocent human life — and that’s a good start.
