Key National Issues

Stem Cell Research Improvement Act of 2009 (H.R. 872) - CMC opposes this bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep Diana DeGette. It would further open the federal treasury to the morally impermissible practice of human embryonic stem-cell research (ESCR). A biblical understanding of God's gift of life requires the Church to oppose the destruction of nascent human life, even for the noble cause of seeking a cure to catastrophic and chronic diseases.

Marriage Protection Act of 2009 (H.R.1269) - CMC supports this bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Dan Burton. This will would prevent Congress and the federal courts from changing the definition of marriage. We believe God's definition of marriage - the union of one man and one woman - is sufficient for our society and should not be expanded to include same-sex unions.
H.R. 708 - CMC supports this bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith. This legislation would reinstate the doctrine known as the Mexico City policy, which forbids the government from granting funds targeted for family planning services in developing nations to organizations that promote abortion. President Obama reversed this policy early in 2009. A proper understanding of God's gift of life leads us to oppose any government action that promotes the taking of that life through abortion.

Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 (H.R. 1913) - CMS opposes this bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. John Conyers. It would expand federal civil-rights laws to provide special protections for homosexual, bisexual and transgendered persons. These persons should not qualify for protected status because their sexual behavior is not an innate characteristic such as race, gender and national origin - categories already protected under hate-crime laws.

Broadcaster Freedom Act of 2009 (H.R. 226) - CMC supports this bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Mike Pence. It would prohibit the Federal Communications Commission from reinstating the so-called Fairness Doctrine, a rule requiring broadcast radio and television outlets to provide all sides of controversial issues. This is a constitutionally impermissible requirement that actually serves to stifle open discussion of issues.

D.C. Defense of Marriage Act (H.R. 2608) - CMC supports this bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan. This bill would reverse a decision by the District of Columbia Council to recognize same-sex marriages performed in states where those unions are legal. Congress has the right to overrule the council because the District of Columbia is a federal territory, and we believe they should do so.

Parents' Rights Constitutional Amendment (H.J. Res. 42) - CMC supports this legislation, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra. This proposed constitutional amendment would forbid Congress or any state from enacting legislation or entering into any multinational treaty that encroaches upon the ability of parents to make decisions on behalf of their children. It would continue to permit the government to intervene in cases of abuse or neglect. CMC believes the government should stay out of the parent-child relationship in all but extreme cases where the child's life or physical health would otherwise be endangered.

Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act (H.R. 2267) and H.R. 2266 - CMC opposes these bills, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Barney Frank. Both of these bills harm efforts to prohibit Internet gambling in the United States, particularly betting on college and professional sporting events. H.R. 2266 would delay the implementation of already overdue rules for a gambling-regulation bill Congress passed in July 2006. CMC opposes the expansion of legalized gambling because it destroys lives and families.

S. Con. Res. 26 - CMC supports this resolution, which is Congress's official apology for the abhorrent practice of slavery. It is currently under consideration in the House of Representatives.

Health Care Reform - Congress is expected to tackle a massive health-care reform bill beginning sometime in the third quarter of 2009. CMC will oppose any health-care reform package that does not specifically prohibit coverage of abortion in mandatory health-benefit plan, or the use of tax dollars for abortion.

Employment Non Discrimination Act - H.R. 2981 and H.R. 3017. CMC opposes these bills, sponsored by Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass. They would establish homosexuals and transgendered persons as protected classes under U.S. law concerning employment and other public accommodations.
