Our History

God challenged Rod Parsley to take a more active role in moral issues in November 2003, during a White House ceremony at which President George W. Bush signed into law a ban on the heinous practice of partial-birth abortion. Parsley had long advocated for the bill’s passage, and earlier had been instrumental in the passage of the Sudan Peace Act of 2002. He accepted the call, and announced the formation of the Center for Moral Clarity in July 2004.

Almost immediately, CMC launched a national voter-registration drive and then became involved in movement to define marriage exclusively as the union of one man and one woman. His 2004 fall speaking tour focused on 11 proposed state ballot issues that defined marriage the way God does – and all 11 passed by large margins in the November election.

In 2005, CMC established itself as a vital resource for clergy of all faiths with a series of informative Pastors’ and Christian Leaders’ Forums. Activists attending were encouraged to sustain the Church’s historic and biblical role in cultural change. CMC equipped these leaders with research materials, videos, bulletin inserts and other tools to help them communicate vital moral issues to their congregations.

The year 2006 brought new opportunities for Rod Parsley to assume a leading role in opposing an issue to significantly expand legalized gambling in the state. Despite a well-financed campaign run by horse-racing tracks and other gambling interests, and a promise to funnel a portion of the profits to college scholarships, Ohio voters defeated the proposal by a margin of 57 percent to 43 percent. CMC led the effort to defeat the issue with a broad range of both conservative and liberal religious organizations.

As the U.S. Supreme Court weighed the constitutionality of the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, CMC responded with its first amicus (friend of the court) brief in the spring of 2006, a plea to the justices to consider the human cost of abortion. The court upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortion in April 2007.

As the nation approaches a pivotal national election in 2012, CMC has become a reliable source of common-sense, biblically based wisdom concerning our most pressing moral issues. Rod Parsley’s answer to the call God gave him just a short time ago has born fruit, in the form of a vital resource for the body of Christ and for values voters across the nation.
